Introduction to the organisation:

UES International is an Australian family owned company established in 1904 and is the leading supplier, importer, exporter and manufacturer of high quality industrial, marine and transportational hardware.

The NSW Head office is located in Lidcombe with branches in the following locations:

  • Wetherill Park, NSW

  • Darwin, QLD
  • Melbourne, VIC
  • Adelaide, SA
  • Perth, WA
  • Auckland, NZ

The quality management system covers all the operations of UES international.

Case Study:

The Operations Manager, Peter Mundy, was looking for a quality management system that was simple, compliant, and not burdensome. He mentioned he would be happy if he had a quality system made up of 10 pages.

The system development stage commenced on the 11th of December, 2006 at the head office in Sydney. Interviews and documentation were finished and approved in the first 3 days. Training, including internal audit training was completed on the fourth day. During all meetings with staff and management, an excellent attitude was shown toward ISO 9001 systems. This was the main reason the documentation and training was completed with such speed.

Documentation was reviewed at the Brisbane Branch for fit. Some changes were made to the documentation, and a Brisbane specific picking and packing process was developed. Otherwise, all the other branches complied with the Head Office procedures.

Internal audits for UES International were completed by the end of January 2007. The audit outcomes were excellent.

Did we get the documentation down to 10 pages? Not quite, but we were close enough. Peter did have a bit of fun introducing the manual to the other branches, to see their reactions. It was not what they expected.

The time for the certification audit arrived on the 11th of February. Although very compliant, we managed one minor corrective action which turned out to be quite positive, and actually highlighted the benefit of auditing. A very positive result

  • Major Corrective Actions: 0
  • Minor Corrective Actions: 1

Although a Christmas break in between, the Head Office and all 6 branches of UES International were certified in just over 2 months after commencing the process toward certification.
